Proton VPN vs NordVPN 2026: Free Plan, Open Source, Jurisdiction

Proton VPN and NordVPN end up on the same shortlist for opposite reasons. One comes from a Swiss company whose main business is encrypted email and publishes the source code of its apps. The other is a large consumer VPN with a deep toolbox around it. This comparison sticks to facts anyone can check on both providers' own sites, and it says plainly where each one loses.

The short verdict

• Proton VPN wins on three points you can verify yourself in ten minutes: it has a genuinely free plan, it publishes the source code of its client apps, and it is operated from Switzerland.
• NordVPN wins on Meshnet, a private network between your own devices that Proton simply does not offer, and on a threat blocker that inspects downloaded files rather than filtering at DNS level only.

There is no single winner here. If you want to try a VPN without paying, or you want auditable client code, take Proton VPN. If you want to reach your own machines remotely, or you want download scanning bundled in, take NordVPN.

The free plan is the one difference you cannot argue with

Proton VPN has a free tier that does not cap your data. It limits you to one device and a restricted set of countries, and speeds are lower than on the paid plan, but it is a real product and not a seven-day trial with a card on file.

NordVPN has no free tier. It sells a money-back window instead, which is not the same thing: you pay first, and you have to remember to ask.

If your question is "can I check whether a VPN breaks my banking app before I pay", only one of these two answers it.

Published source code, and what an audit actually proves

Proton publishes the source of its Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS clients. NordVPN does not publish its full client source.

This matters less than people claim and more than sceptics admit. Published source lets an outside reader confirm what the app does on your machine: which servers it contacts, what it logs locally, whether the kill switch is wired the way the marketing page says. It proves nothing about what happens on the servers.

Both providers have commissioned independent no-logs audits and published the reports. That is the right instrument for the server side, and both pass it. So on trust, the honest reading is: same evidence on the server, more evidence on the client for Proton.

Switzerland versus Panama

Proton AG is Swiss. NordVPN is operated from Panama. Neither country is a member of the intelligence-sharing arrangements people usually worry about, and both providers point at that fact.

The practical difference is narrower than the marketing suggests. Swiss law is written down, tested in Swiss courts, and Proton publishes a transparency report describing the requests it receives. Panama has no data retention obligation for this kind of service. Pick the story you find more legible; both are defensible, and neither compensates for a provider that keeps logs.

Where NordVPN is plainly better

Two things, and they are not small.

Meshnet. NordVPN can link your own devices into a private encrypted network: reach the desktop at home from a laptop abroad, move files without a cloud in the middle, play a LAN game across cities without opening a port on your router. Proton VPN has no equivalent feature. If this is what you came for, the comparison stops here.

Download scanning. Proton's NetShield blocks ads, trackers and known malicious domains at DNS resolution. NordVPN's Threat Protection does that too and additionally inspects files you download. DNS filtering cannot catch a malicious file served from a domain that is not on any list; file inspection can.

What we refuse to rank

Server counts and country counts. Both publish numbers in the same order of magnitude, both claim well over a hundred countries, and neither figure can be checked from outside. A number you cannot verify is not a criterion, so we do not use it to separate them.

Speed. We have not run controlled throughput tests on both services, so we do not publish a speed winner. Both offer WireGuard, which is the protocol that decides most of it, and on a normal home connection you are unlikely to feel the gap. Anyone quoting you a precise megabit ranking measured on one afternoon from one city is selling you the measurement, not the VPN.

Which should you choose?

• You want to test before paying, or you need a permanently free VPN for occasional use → Proton VPN.
• You want to read the code that runs on your own machine → Proton VPN.
• You want to reach your own devices remotely → NordVPN, for Meshnet.

Proton VPN and NordVPN are both credible, both audited, both on WireGuard. The split is clean: Proton gives you more to inspect and a way in that costs nothing, NordVPN gives you more to do once you are inside. Decide on the feature you will actually use, not on a server count.
