ExpressVPN is not a bad service. Its Lightway protocol is solid. The server network is broad. Its record in censorship-heavy places is truly better than many rivals. But two things push users to think twice.

Kape Technologies. Kape's $936 million buyout of ExpressVPN in 2021 was the largest deal in VPN history. Kape now owns ExpressVPN, CyberGhost, Private Internet Access, and ZenMate. Together they hold tens of millions of subscribers. So much grouping is odd in a sector that sells privacy and freedom as its core pitch. No security incident has been logged since the buyout. But for users who care about the trust chain, it is a fair factor in the choice.
