Search this question and almost every result will tell you to install a VPN. That advice is mostly wrong, and it is worth saying plainly on a site that earns from VPN referrals: most Indian television is legally available in the United States without one. Here is what carries what, and the narrow set of cases where a VPN earns its place.
What is legally available, and what it carries

Hulu holds Hotstar content in the United States. That matters because the US Disney+ Hotstar app closed in 2022, and its library moved into Hulu and Disney+.
Other Indian platforms also operate in the US market. The practical approach is to list the channels you actually watch, then check which service carries them, rather than picking by price and hoping.
The three cases where a VPN genuinely helps
A catalogue licensed only inside India. The Indian-region JioHotstar library, including some cricket coverage, is not the same as what the US services carry. Travel. If you already pay for an Indian service and want it to keep working from abroad, a VPN preserves access you have already bought. That is continuity, not circumvention.
Public Wi-Fi. Hotel, airport and cafe networks are worth encrypting whatever you are watching. This has nothing to do with geography and applies to everything you do online.
Where the usual advice goes wrong
Two claims are repeated constantly, and neither survives contact with the facts.
"You need a VPN to watch Indian TV in the US." You do not, for most channels, because they are licensed and available here. Being told otherwise usually means someone is paid for the referral, and that includes us when it applies.
"A VPN unlocks everything." It changes the location your traffic appears to come from. It does not create a subscription, it does not defeat a service's own account and payment checks, and it will not conjure content that is not licensed anywhere. Avoid the free-streaming trap
Sites offering complete live Indian channel line-ups for free are not licensed. They are a reliable source of malware and aggressive advertising, they disappear without warning, and no VPN makes them safe or lawful. If free is the constraint, the honest options are the broadcasters' own ad-supported channels and official presences, plus the free trials the legal services offer.
For travel or the India-only catalogue: NordVPN

Reach for a VPN only for the India-only catalogue, for travel with a subscription you already pay for, or for security on untrusted networks. That is a shorter list than the internet will tell you, and it is the accurate one.
